Quilted Tyvek Squares

I love to design using different techniques and materials - mixed media & skills.

Here are some sketchbooks I have decorated with quilted Tyvek squares

These spiral-bound Pink Pig sketchbooks, stocked by Colourcraft, have handmade coloured silk covers (front and back) and 35 leaf quality 150gsm cartridge paper (made from acid-free pulp purchased from accredited and sustainable resources). 
This picture does not really show how fabulous the silk cover design on the notebooks is, you really do have to hold one in your hands to appreciate it!
They come in some gorgeous colours, I've used the Berry and Lime Green, and a wide range of sizes, I've used the 21cm square. 
Not all the sizes and colours that Colourcraft actually stock, are listed in their website dropdown options so give them a ring if you want to order from the whole range.

For this project, I started with a couple of squares of Tyvek fabric.

These were stamped with a couple of my favourite polymer stamps:  patterned heart and leaf. I mounted the polymer stamp on a acrylic block and inked them with StazOn ink. As the ink is solvent-based, I can paint the Tyvek squares straight away using eco-friendly acrylic paint in leaf green and purple

While the slightly diluted paint was still wet, I sprinkled on a little Brusho SprinkleIT: iridescent violet on the leaf and metallic pearl on the heart.

Once this was dry, I layered the Tyvek on top of black cotton fabric with some quilting batting behind. I chose a couple of variegated threads.

I sewed around the outside of the Tyvek squares with a zig-zag stitch. This holds it firm for the next stage: free machine embroidery of the heart and leaf.

Then it's time to heat distress the Tyvek, using a heat gun. NB. Work in a well-ventilated area. 

I made a heating mat from a folded newspaper covered in kitchen foil. I used a couple of pins to hold the quilted squares to the mat. 

Once cooled, I flattened the squares with my hands, before trimming and using double-sided tape to mount them on the sketchbooks.

Angelina Dragonflies - Garden Mandala part 2

Last time I talked about making the butterflies in my mandala quilt- this time I'm going to show you how I made the dragonflies!

I started with the wings.
First I chose some beautiful Angelina films and fibers- making sure to crinkle the film to get the best effect.

I added a very thin layer of the fibers between two layers of the crinkled film- ironed between parchment paper- a VERY QUICK pass with the iron gets these to fuse together. If you iron for too long of a time, the fibers can change color.  I made two different colors and then cut these into wings.

For the bodies I started by sprinkling some Brusho and SprinkleIT onto fusible web, adding water and letting it dry.

By the way, the paper backing makes a great piece for collage and/or art journals!

I then peeled off the fusible and made a layer of fabric, the painted fusible and a transfer foil in a shimmery and sheer rainbow color- ironed those together to make the base of my dragonfly bodies.

I backed this with more fusible web and then cut and applied my dragonfly bodies with a mini iron (being careful not to melt the wings!). Make sure to protect your iron from the front of your foil/fusible/fabric sandwch as well! 

I then added beads for eyes and voila! Bling bling dragonflies! 

I added some color to the leaves in the middle- now it's just to add ants, ladybugs and maybe some flowers in the corners.

Brusho 24 Colour Boxed Set

Be Brave and Bloom Card with Suzi

Good Day All, It's my pleasure to share my latest creation with you all today; I've created a fun card for you all today showcasing Brusho Crystal Colour Powders, Acrylic Wax and Wax Sticks.

Our theme this month is 'Spring or Easter' and I'm celebrating Spring with my project today.  I've used some lovely stamps from Crafty Roo Designs to help create my Spring time scene;

Here's how I created my project;

Firstly I started off by creating my background papers.  I took a sheet of paper and sprinkled on Turquoise Brusho Crystal Colour Powder and sprayed with water, I dabbed off the excess water and left it to dry.  For my second paper I used a Grass Texture Plate along with the Wax Sticks placing my paper over the texture plate and rubbing over with the Wax Stick; I then sprinkled on some Lime Green Brusho Crystal Colour Powder.  Once that was dry I mixed up some Turquoise Brusho Crystal Colour Powder with water and dabbed my paper into it to add a sky at the top.

I trimmed the Turquoise paper down to fit my card blank ( an A4 sheet of white card folded in half) and tore the Green and Turquoise paper on both sides before adhering to the Turquoise paper.

It was then time to start creating my focal point. For this I used the Bulb Stamp and Beauty always Blooms insert stamp from Crafty Roo Designs.  I stamped these onto white card, I stamped two, so I would have a choice once coloured.  I painted the flowers with Brusho Crystal Colours and once dry added a layer of Acrylic Wax over the flowers and a few areas I wanted highlights to show on my bulbs.

 

I then took Turquoise and Lime Green Brusho Crystal Colours and sprinkled them over the Bulbs and activated with water.

I left these to dry and then added a little Pearl SprinkleIT powder to the Blubs.

At this point I decided to add some more stamping to my background papers, using the Be Brave Enough to Bloom stamp set from Crafty Roo Designs

To colour the flowers on the background paper I mixed Orange and Crimson Brusho Crystal Colour Powders with some of the Acrylic Wax to create a paint.  I used Acrylic Wax rather than water as I would be going over areas of Wax and Brusho Crystal Colour Powders already on the paper.  The Wax on the paper would resist the colours I was adding and my flowers would be patchy, by using the Acrylic Wax there is no resistance so I get full coloured flowers. I used a Bamboo Pen to add my coloured Wax to my project.

I added layer of the coloured wax over the flowers on my bulb to strengthen the colours. At this point I decide I wanted to add some green to the stems and leaves, so I mixed up some Leaf Green Brusho Crystal Powder with the Acrylic Wax.

To finish my background I added some dots of the Orange and Crimson Wax into the background to represent flowers in the background.  I added some Leaf Green Wax to the stamped flowers on the stems and leaves, I also added some to the grassline at the bottom of the flowers for extra shading, to blend this I used my finger.

 

I added a little red netting and some staples just for a extra bit of texture, I then added my background to my card blank, and finally I added my Bulb using some foam pads for dimension.

That's my project for this week, I hope you've enjoyed seeing how I created it. If you've not got any of the Acrylic Wax then you really should add some to you crafty stash, it's lots of fun to work with, very versatile, and lets you create layers of Brusho colour without the colours blending. 

I had lots of fun creating this project, it's so nice to be welcoming Spring, lovely to see the trees getting their new leaves and flowers starting to bloom.

One Background Four Cards with Suzi

Good Day, Today It's my pleasure to share with you my latest creations using lots of ColourCraft Products, I've used a selection of Brusho Crystal Colour Powders, SprinkleIt Powder and Aztec Metallic and Lustre Paints.

  Our theme this month is 'Chill in the Air' so I decided to create a Galaxy Night Sky, the sort of Sky you see on a clear crisp night.  I've created Four Different Cards using the Galaxy paper I created;

Here's how I made them; First of all I created my Galaxy paper using Brusho Crystal Colour Powders in Alizarin Crimson, Violet, Purple, Turquoise and White along with Pearl SprinkleIt Powder.  I then cut the background down to fit my cards.

For my first card I decided to create a wintery scene,

To create this scene I used a piece of the Galaxy paper, along with some White Card cut in the shape of hills, which I edged with blue ink and then gave a coat of Silver Aztec Metallic Paint to give it a lovely subtle shine.  I also die cut a Polar Bear from White Card, edged with blue ink then paint with the Silver paint.  For my Trees and Moon I used some paper that I'd painted with Pink and Purple Aztec Lustre Paints.  I added a little Silver paint to the sky and moon for a bit of extra shine and contrast.

For my next card I decided to find a way to use the smaller bits of Galaxy paper, I love using circles at the moment, so die cut a few circles in different sizes.

To compliment the die cut circles I used a Bubble stamp and sentiment from Crafty Roo Designs.  I love how the circles look like planets.

My final two cards were so quick and simple to make.  I took two pieces of white card and using cut away dies cut my designs from the cards before layering the Galaxy paper behind them and adding to a couple of card blanks.  I also stamped a sentiment on each card using two more sentiment stamps from Crafty Roo Designs.

That's all of my cards for today, as you can see one background paper can be used in a few different ways and even the smallest pieces can be utilised to great effect.  I loved creating my Galaxy background, you never quite know how it's going to turn out, but the Brusho Crystal Colour Powders make it so easy to get great results. This was the first time I used the White Brusho Powder, and it adds some really subtle highlights/stars to the background; adding a little of the Pearl SprinkleIt Powder gave it a love subtle shimmer too so it really does look like a starry night.

Christmas Lights

Hi Everyone and Happy December!

Can you believe it is the 1st of December already!.. time has well and truly flown by this year..

I thought I would start December off with a lovely wee Christmas card using Colourcraft Titanium White acrylic paint and pearl SprinkleIT..

Step 1

I took 2 pieces of matt board size 5" x 7" and covered with patterned paper

Step 2

I cut 3 pieces of vintage cotton lace and glued with fabritac onto the card front

Step 3

I dry brushed colourcraft titanium white acrylic paint around the edges of the card 

Step 4

I placed a small amount of water on my work surface, then dipped my paintbrush into the pearl SprinkleIT and added to the water to make shimmery water, I then gathered this into my paint brush and tapped over the surface of my card, you will see the shimmer shows up well on both the paper and the fabric

Step 5

I then attached the two separate pieces of mat board together with seam binding tied in a double bow and used my cropodile and grommets for my card hinge.

Step 6

The star and Christmas lights embellishments were from my own Christmas stash, however on my next blog post in 2 weeks time I shall show you how to make the decorative star embelishments :)
