Stag by Rebecca Yoxall

Holidays are upon us
HO HO HO
Hope you're having a great Friday.

I have chosen to paint one of my favourite subjects for my final post in December. The majestic stag. In the UK 6 species of deer can be found. All male deer/stags grow antlers, which are bony structures completely unique to deer species. They grow during spring and summer then generally are shed the following spring and re grow bigger each year :-)
I have chosen to paint my stag using Brusho and I hope you like him.

I drew out my image in pencil on high quality watercolour paper and then went over it with a permanent ink black pen.

I sprayed the paper with water into which I sprinkled a dark brown brusho

with a little more water added I was able to add Ultramarine brusho to the paper also.

I gave this a little time to settle and sprayed a bit more water again to allow the colours to dilute and spread evenly. Then I took a brush and using the brown brusho painted in the body of the stag , the darker patch on the face and the tops of the ears. The antlers were painted in with a mix of the brown and ultramarine brusho

I continued to add more colour using a small amount of black mixed in with the brown to create some shading.

I allowed this to dry. Then using a small amount of white gesso I painted in the lighter parts of the face, nose and chin. Also bits in the ears and streaks to emphasise the animals neck.

I love how the background drifts away giving the illusion of space without having to paint in a complex image. This is Brusho at its finest. It demonstrates the wonderful expressive quality of the medium and how easy it is to work with.

Wishing you all a fantastic festive season and I'll be back in the new year.
